🕐 What Are Continuous Tenses?

Continuous means something that’s still happening or was happening for a while. Continuous Tenses describe ongoing actions — actions in progress at a particular time.

Structure: Subject + Be (is/am/are/was/were/will be) + Verb-ing

  • I am reading a book. (Present)
  • She was watching TV. (Past)
  • They will be travelling tomorrow. (Future)

🌈 The 3 Main Continuous Tenses (with Easy Examples)

1️⃣ Present Continuous Tense

Used for actions happening now or around this moment.

  • I am studying English.
  • She is cooking dinner.

Common mistake: ❌ I am go to school. ✅ I am going to school.

💡 Tip: If you can say “right now,” you’re in the present continuous!

2️⃣ Past Continuous Tense

Used for actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past.

  • At 7 PM yesterday, I was doing my homework.
  • They were playing football when it started to rain.

Common mistake: ❌ He were reading. ✅ He was reading.

💡 Tip: Add a time phrase like “at 7 PM,” “yesterday,” or “when…” to signal the past.

3️⃣ Future Continuous Tense

Used for actions that will be happening at a certain time in the future.

  • I will be working at 10 AM tomorrow.
  • She will be travelling next week.

Common mistake: ❌ I will working. ✅ I will be working.

💡 Tip: Think of this tense as a “scheduled future in progress.”

🚨 Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Using base form instead of “-ing” → I am go ✅ I am going.
  • ❌ Forgetting “be” → She playing ✅ She is playing.
  • ❌ Using stative verbs (know, love, understand) in continuous form ✅ I know the answer.
